Podcasts Are Showing Up All Over YouTube
The podcast landscape is rapidly evolving, and video is taking center stage. Recent trends show that video podcasting is not just a passing fad, but a significant shift in how audiences consume content.
According to recent surveys, YouTube has emerged as the leading platform for podcast consumption in the U.S.
The numbers speak for themselves:
One-third of weekly podcast listeners discover new shows on YouTube.
40% of new podcast listeners actively watch while listening.
Three out of the top five podcasts on Spotify's U.S. chart feature video components.
The surge in video podcasting aligns with the rise of Gen Z listenership. Edison Research found that 47% of the Gen Z online population in the U.S. are monthly podcast listeners - a 57% increase since 2018.
Spotify Joins the Video Race
Not to be left behind, Spotify has recently expanded its video podcast capabilities. The platform now allows creators to upload video content for podcasts not hosted on Spotify itself. This feature, while exciting, comes with some important considerations:
Videos are hosted on Spotify's servers, not through RSS.
Plays won't be reflected in your podcast host's analytics.
Once a video is uploaded, Spotify appears to use it exclusively - even for audio-only listeners.
The shift towards video presents both opportunities and challenges for podcast creators:
video content can help attract new audiences, especially younger listeners.
creators can now leverage platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram to grow their audience.
investing in video equipment and adapting content for visual consumption may be necessary.
with plays on platforms like Spotify not reflected in traditional podcast analytics, tracking overall performance may become more complex.
As video podcasting continues to gain traction, we're likely to see more innovations in this space. Traditional audio-only podcasts aren't going away, but creators who embrace video may find themselves with a competitive edge in reaching and engaging audiences.
